Abra, Philippines – A member of the 102nd Infantry Battalion (IB) was wounded after the army's encounter with members of a communist terrorist group (CTG) in Barangay Mogao, Licuan-Baay, Abra on November 04, 2022.

In a press release, the 5th Infantry Division said that a day before the clash, the 102 IB troops discovered an abandoned hideout in Barangay Cawayan, Licuan – Baay. The hideout was said to have been occupied by around 10 people.

On Friday, troops of the same battalion were conducting security patrol in response to the reports of presence of armed rebels in Mogao when they encountered undetermined number of Komiteng Larangang Guerilla - North Abra members.

The government troops engaged in a 15-minute firefight against the rebels who tried to escape in different directions.

Troops of the 24th IB later had a blocking position with the fleeing armed rebels. The gunfight, accordingly, lasted for five minutes.

During the encounter, Private Marvin Ojascastro of 102nd IB sustained a gunshot wound on his left leg but is now in stable condition.

Lieutenant Colonel Lemuel Baduya, the Battalion Commander of 102nd IB, left a stern warning for the rebels ‘to return now to the folds of the law or pay the price of their atrocities against the people.’

“Itong engkwentro na ito ay patunay na puspusan ang ating paghahanap sa pumaslang sa ating kasamahan at mga biktima ng karahasan ng NPA na mapanagot sa batas. We will be unrelenting in our pursuit of peace and prosperity in this part of the region,” added Baduya.

Just last week, two soldiers were killed when the CTG ambushed the army group in Gacab, Malibcong, Abra while on their way to help with the Disaster Response Operations (DRO) in the quake-hit villages.
