Tinglayan, Kalinga – Tinglayan contender Mercedes Moguil ended her stint in the Miss Kalinga 2024 pageant as the first runner-up, bringing pride to her hometown known as the home of the legendary mambabatok.

Moguil came in second to Tabuk City’s Audrey Magallis, who brought home the most coveted Miss Kalinga crown with her wit, grace, and charisma.

Moguil, who is equally beautiful, showcased her talent, grace, and intellect in the show of beauty and culture, earning the nod of the judges for her to take a spot in the top 5.

Meanwhile, her evening gown drew inspiration from the ‘batok’ culture of Tinglayan, which was further described by pageant fanatics as a Michelle Dee-inspired gown, referring to the black gown used by the latter during her Miss Universe 2023 stint, also inspired by Apo Whang-od.

In the question and answer segment, she was asked about the strategies she would employ to promote mental health awareness and well-being in Kalinga.

She responded that a festive way is also a good way to promote mental health awareness, especially among youth, by letting them join and immerse themselves in the festivities.

“We can let them join, we can let them immerse, and we can let them participate, and in this way, we can give them a better and safer place, and I do believe that this festive way... it can be an inspiration to our government that this can also be a way on how we can achieve mental health awareness,” she said.

With her win, she received P40,000 in cash, a sash, and a crown.

Moguil is also set to receive a special commendation from the local government unit of Tinglayan.

Tinglayan Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, in a statement, extended his congratulatory message to Moguil for her triumph while also commending the efforts of Tinglayan Bet for Mr. Kalinga, Juanito Wanason.

“Mercedes Moguil and Juanito Wanson have exemplified the essence of Tinglayan's spirit. Mercedes, your triumph is a source of pride for us, and Juanito, your commitment has not gone unnoticed. Both stories inspire us to persevere in the face of challenges,” he stated.

The lawyer-politician added that with the journey the two took, Tinglayanos should view it as a stepping stone and instill in their minds that ‘success is not solely measured by awards but also by the resilience demonstrated in the pursuit of dreams.’

"Our representatives have showcased the richness of Tinglayan's culture and the strength of our community. Let this be a reminder that each effort contributes to the collective success of our municipality. Through perseverance and hope, we will continue to thrive and shine on any stage," Mayor Gumilab concluded.
