Tinglayan, Kalinga – With the rising cost of chemical or inorganic fertilizers, farmers need to embrace organic farming not only to reduce their farming production cost but also to help maintain soil structure.

In Tinglayan, its local government unit through the Office of the Municipal Agriculture and Services spearheaded a training on foliar fertilizer and organic feeds formulation as one way to introduce and promote organic farming in the municipality.

The trainees come from Barangays Ambato, Poblacion, Luplupa, and Old Tinglayan who are recipients and former recipients of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

Larae Lactao of the Municipal Information Office relayed that said recipients were prioritized as part of the commitment of the local government to supporting 4Ps beneficiaries as well as those who already graduated from the program.

The trainees learned how to make organic fertilizers, feeds and fermented fruit juice, utilizing materials that can be found in the area.

With said training, the participants gained skills necessary in reducing external inputs, thus helping farmers gain more income in their farm produce.

Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, in a statement, advised the farmers to apply what they have learned in the training and be one with the goal of the local government in the continuous promotion of sustainable agriculture in the municipality.

He also told them of the plan of the LGU to recognize outstanding farmers in the municipality, with goal in mind, that these would motivate them to make use of sustainable agricultural practices which is helpful in maximizing productivity and profit while minimizing environmental damage.
