Kabayan, Benguet - Mt. Pulag, the Philippines' second-highest peak, continues to attract throngs of tourists despite plunging temperatures.

In an interview conducted by local media with Emerita Albas, Superintendent of Mt. Pulag National Park, alarming reports surfaced regarding the onset of frost due to temperatures plummeting to a chilling two to four degrees Celsius.

The freezing climate has posed a threat to the health of visitors, with some unfortunate tourists experiencing hypothermia, particularly those who embark on early ascents to the mountain.

In response to these challenges, tour organizers and trekkers are taking proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of climbers, advocating for the use of thermal blankets and urging the adoption of proper attire suitable for cold weather conditions.

To manage the escalating number of visitors, camping on weekends and holidays at designated sites is now restricted due to overcrowding concerns.

Superintendent Albas emphasized the importance of opting for homestays as a safer alternative for tourists.

Additionally, leaders are advising travelers to equip themselves with essential winter clothing like gloves, scarves, mini-thermos, and other warming gear to stave off potential risks.

To ensure the safety of visitors, mandatory measures such as seminar orientations and medical check-ups have been instituted before embarking on the trek to these scenic locations. Albas stressed the necessity of these protocols to ascertain the physical preparedness of tourists for the challenging conditions atop Mt. Pulag.

Moreover, in a plea to alleviate traffic congestion and avoid inconveniencing local residents, Albas urged the public to limit their visits to the tourist spot to weekdays (Monday to Friday). This recommendation aims to reduce heavy traffic flow, which can impede the daily lives of those residing in the area.

As the allure of Mt. Pulag persists, authorities are doubling down on safety measures to ensure that visitors can relish the breathtaking views while mitigating the hazards posed by the mountain's plummeting temperatures.
