Kalinga, Philippines – Eleven young Kalinga farmers won the Young Farmers Challenge: Best Business Model Canvas (BMC) conducted by the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera, a competitive financial grant assistance program intended to draw young blood into the agriculture and agri- fishery enterprises.

Many young people shy away from the farming profession due to some misconception that it is all but hardship.

With said program and similar projects, it is seen that more and more young people are participating in the agri sector.

Earlier this week, the Office of the Provincial Agricultural Services of Kalinga announced the winners of the challenge following the presentation of the participants’ BMCs on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.

Of the 20 BMC participants, eleven from Kalinga won the said contest. There were six winners in the individual category.

The young farmers include Cris Reshon Guiral ‘Solar Powered Urban Circulating Aquaculture’, Patrocinio Telan ‘Devine's Vermi-Bell and hydrophonics Enterprise’, Aimee Gaddao ‘AIMs Mulberry and Cocoon Production’, Mayume Gerlaban ‘Mayumi-Jay Vegetables Seedling Enterprise’, Edison Adora ‘Ambot's Eco Farm’, Domingo Bayog Jr. ‘Bamboo's Huevo Farm’.

Meanwhile, for the group category, there were two that got the prize.

They are the ‘Modern Farmers Organic Farming’ with Sheea Vee Guyao, Hanagail Baliwag, and Hazel Daligdig as members and the ‘DanDale's Rabittry’ with Danny Joe Perona and Crisdale Dollante as members.

The individual category received P50,000.00 cash each, while the group received P100,000.00 cash each.

It is expected that the financial grant will be used by the young farmers for their start-ups or as additional capital to add more value to their enterprises.

These young Kalinga farmers will be joining the regional level competitions.

The Regional Focal person of the Young Farmers Challenge Program of DA-CAR, Jocelyn Beray, hopes young farmers will be qualified.

The competition will be held in the last quarter of this year.

Beray encouraged the young farmers to immediately start with their business enterprises before the regional contest.

Beray advised the young farmers to increase their business production as this will be the requirement to join the said competition.
