Abra, Philippines – Following the devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that hit Abra yesterday morning, the Department of Social Welfare and Development has released an initial P10 million worth of cash assistance as immediate aid to affected families and individuals.

Department Secretary Erwin T. Tulfo handed over the assistance to the provincial officials as he made a visit to the place hours after the powerful earthquake jolted the province and other parts of Luzon.

Apart from financial aid, the DSWD secretary likewise informed of the delivery of food aid.

“Parating pa po ang higit P10,000 food packs mula sa CAR regional warehouse mamayang hapon and additional cash assistance bukas (ng) umaga,” stated Tulfo in his official social media post.

The secretary assured the preparedness of the national government through the department saying, “Ang iyo pong pamahalaan ay narito lamang po, sa likod niyo po. Lumingon lang kayo sa likod, narito po kami. Hindi naman po namin kayo pababayaan kaya nga po ang utos ng Pangulo na siguro po wala pang 30 minutes pagkatapos ng earthquake, inutusan na akong magtungo po rito.”

Abra Vice-Governor Maria Jocelyn V. Bernos earlier said that 70 houses were damaged while 20 government buildings and three bridges in the province were destroyed by the earthquake.

One casualty and 64 injuries were reported in the province.

Provincial officials said they will soon declare a state of emergency due to the extent of the damage.

The Office of the Governor through its Facebook page revealed that exactly 159 years ago from today, Lagangilang was also hit by a temblor.
