2.10-meter Pygmy Sperm Whale found dead along coast of Sanchez Mira, Cagayan

Sanchez Mira, Cagayan – A dead Pygmy sperm whale was washed ashore at a beach along the coast of Barangay Magacan, Sanchez Mira on Tuesday, October 12.

The sperm whale found is about 2.10-meter-long, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources- Region 2.

The bureau relayed Wednesday, October 13, that the dead male sperm whale was discovered by a fisherman amid the heavy rains brought by Typhoon Maymay.

After being notified of the incident, BFAR personnel proceeded to the area to check the condition of the whale and found out that its empty stomach was filled with parasites and a foamy fluid was present in the animal’s throat up to its lungs.

The necropsy conducted revealed the whale did not suffer from internal bleeding and its internal organs, the bureau said, are still intact.

Samples were also collected for further examination at the Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network (PMMSN) Laboratory.

According to Dr. Jefferson Soriano, ‘the harsh weather may have added to the weakened state of the animal and eventually succumbed to death.’
