2 honest school boys in Bontoc commended for returning P50,000 cash

Updated: Mar 15

It might be their first time to hold a bundle of P1,000 bills, but this didn’t stop two boys in Bontoc, Mountain Province from doing the right thing which is to return the money they found to its owner.

Best friends Christopher Sigua and Troy Chumapoy were praised by the Bontoc Local Government Unit through certificates of commendation on Monday, March 11, for displaying values of honesty and integrity by returning the P50,000 they found on the road.

Finding the money

According to DepEd Mountain Province, Christopher and Troy, a grade 9 and grade 8 students at the Mountain Province General Comprehensive High School (MPGCHS) hung out with their siblings and other peers at the mountain on March 3.

At 5 p.m., the group decided to go home and while they were on their way, Christopher noticed a brown wallet on the road containing P50,000 and cards named to Shirlene Mang-usan.

Christopher admitted it was their first time to see such huge amount of money, but their immediate thought was to return it.

On board their motorcycle, Christopher and Troy tried to catch the motorcycle they came across with after noticing that the woman on the ID looks the same with one of the riders of said vehicle. However, they had to stop upon reaching the boundary of Bontoc Ili and Guina-ang after running out of fuel.

The two boys tried ringing the number they found on the ID, but it was out of coverage area.

Looking for the owner

Christopher and Troy admitted they were told by some of their friends to keep the money since no one saw them having it. However, the two boys were scared to own what’s not theirs, and they knew that the P50,000 cash is meant to be used for something important.

When they got home, Troy’s mother contacted Shirlene on Messenger to inform her of the wallet the kids found and to meet them at the post office the following morning.

On the day they were supposed to meet, the two teenagers were not able to see Shirlene, so they proceeded to their school and decided to bring the wallet to the police or radio station after their class.

During their last period, Christopher and Troy didn’t have to go to the police station when Shirlene came to their school. It was then they returned her the wallet and found out that the P50,000 was for house construction supplies.

They were invited to lunch by Shirlene, but the boys had to meet their friends, and so the grateful lady gave them something instead.

Always return what’s not yours

Christopher and Troy are definitely among the young individuals who are being brought up well with values by their parents. Troy recounted that her mom taught her to always return anything they find to its owner regardless of the amount.

As for Christopher, he believes that the wrong things people do will come back to them.
