2 students who drowned in Chico River still being searched

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Two students in Tabuk City reportedly drowned during a family outing at the Chico River this February 1, 2022.


The victims were identified as Maybelle Gonzalo, 20 years old, and Frank Gonzalo, 17, both are students and residents of Purok 1, Bulanao.


According to the investigation report of the Tabuk City Police Station, the victims and their family went to the Chico River at FF Cruz around 12:30 PM yesterday.


Four hours later, around 4:20 PM, the victims, together with their cousin, went swimming at the deeper portion of the river. Moments after, they were seen shouting for help while struggling to get away from the strong current.

The police report revealed that one of their cousins tried to grab them out of the water, but the current was too strong, carrying away the victims and drowning them.


The victims’ relatives reported the incident to the authorities and a search and rescue operation was launched.

As of this writing, personnel from the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and City DRRMO are still searching for the victims.
