Flora, Apayao – Three suspected rebels have been killed in armed encounters in the Cordillera region in October.

The latest casualty is the death of a suspected member of the Komiteng Probinsya Cagayan of Komiteng Rehiyon Cagayan Valley (KRCV) on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023 in Flora, Apayao.

5th Infantry Division reported that the government troops proceeded to Barangay Upper Atok after receiving information about the presence of a communist group in the area. This resulted in a 5-minute firefight with around nine members of the KRVC.

The rebels were said to have withdrawn and left one of their members who was later found dead by the military at the encounter site.

Items recovered after the gunfight include an M16 rifle, M203 grenade launcher, 40MM ammunition, jungle pack, commercial radio, improvised flashlights, medical paraphernalia, and other belongings of the rebels.

The other two suspected NPA casualties, meantime, were killed in armed encounters in Abra. One died in Buneg, Lacub on Oct. 13 and the other passed away in a firefight in Barangay Gacab, Malibcong on Oct. 03.

The casualty in Lacub, however, was claimed to be innocent and civilian by his family.
