TABUK CITY, Kalinga — Thirty-five farmers in Barangay Bulo, Tabuk City are expected to benefit from a ₱30.56-million water impounding project designed to provide irrigation to 85 hectares of farmland and help sustain crop production during prolonged dry spells.

The Bulo-Magasusu Small Water Impounding Project (SWIP), which costs ₱30,569,396.93, is intended to provide a more reliable water supply for irrigation, improve farm productivity, and help farmers cope with changing weather conditions.

According to information provided to Guru Press Cordillera by Engr. Renato G. Ocinar, Water Resources Development Officer II of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Soils and Water Management (DA-BSWM), the project has a 177-hectare watershed and an 18-hectare pond area for collecting and storing water for agricultural use.

The watershed collects rainwater that flows toward the project, while the pond area serves as a reservoir to help supply nearby farms when needed.

The project was implemented under the DA’s Fiscal Year 2024 Locally Funded Project for the Development of Upland Irrigation Systems and Small Water Irrigation and Impounding Projects (LFP-SWIIP).

Construction began in April 2025, with completion initially scheduled for July 2026. However, unfavorable weather conditions delayed the work. The project has since been completed this year.

Its inauguration is scheduled for November 5, with Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Tiu Laurel Jr. expected to lead the ceremony.

Once operational, the facility is expected to strengthen irrigation support for the 35 farmer-beneficiaries across the 85-hectare service area, particularly during periods of limited rainfall.
