La Trinidad, Benguet - A man posing as a PDEA agent was arrested on September 3 after he was personally nabbed by Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency–Cordillera (PDEA-CAR) Regional Director Derrick Carreon along Km. 5, Halsema Highway.

The man was identified by the authorities as a 35-year-old resident of La Trinidad, Benguet.

A report from a local media outlet said that Carreon spotted a man wearing a PDEA agent shirt, but he immediately grew suspicious as he did not recognize him as part of his unit or one of his agents.

When he approached the man and asked him to show credentials as a PDEA agent, he failed to do so. With that, the PDEA officer escorted him straight to the La Trinidad Municipal Police Station for verification.

An investigation was later conducted, and it was revealed that the suspect has been using fictitious names and already has a record for theft in the said municipality

Authorities believe that he has been falsely presenting himself as a PDEA operative since 2021, a scheme that Carreon warned could put not only legitimate anti-drug operations at risk but also endanger the lives of both agents and civilians.

Charges for usurpation of authority, illegal use of insignia, and use of false aliases are now being prepared against the suspect, who refused to issue any statement while in police custody.
