35-yr.-old man trying to see ex-girlfriend mistaken for intruder, hacked to death

Amulung, Cagayan—What seemed like a simple attempt to see an old lover turned into a tragedy for a 35-year-old man in Amulung, Cagayan, after he was hacked to death by the father of his ex-girlfriend on Sunday, September 28. 

Reports of local media outlets in Cagayan said that before the incident, the man and his 30-year-old ex-partner faced each other at the Iguig Police Station on September 27, where the woman insisted on ending their relationship because they were always having an argument. 

One of the couple’s heated altercations, accordingly, was when the boyfriend caused trouble at their residence. 

To settle matters, the couple signed an agreement to separate before the police at said station. According to Bombo Radyo-Tuguegarao, it was also written in the agreement that the man would no longer talk to or disturb the woman. 

However, in the early hours of September 28, the man went to the house of the woman’s parents in Barangay Marabbob, Amulung, believing she was there. Little did he know, the woman had already gone to the other barangay.

At around 1:00 a.m., the father of the woman was awakened by the sound of someone forcing open their door and window. Alarmed at the situation, the father grabbed a bolo and went out through the kitchen to see who was outside. 

In the darkness, he saw a figure of a man. Startled and thinking his family was in danger, he hacked the man on the neck, killing him instantly. After that, he surrendered himself to the barangay tanods. 

The incident was immediately reported to the Amulung Police Station, who proceeded to the scene to investigate.

It was only during the investigation that the father knew that the man he killed was his daughter’s ex-boyfriend. The father told police that he never knew the man personally since his daughter never introduced the victim. 

The identities of involved individuals were not disclosed by the authorities.    

If the matter is not settled amicably, the father of the woman will be charged with homicide.
