4-times-a-week Baguio-Cebu flights begin Dec. 16

Updated: Nov 29, 2022

Baguio City, Philippines – After over a decade of its closure to commercial flights, Loakan Airport is expected to resume operation with the opening of direct flights between Baguio City and Cebu, announced Philippine Airlines (PAL) on Wednesday, October 26, 2022.

Built in 1934, the Loakan Airport was closed to commercial airlines in the 1990s due to landing difficulties caused by operational issues raised such as the lack of access road to close the runway to pedestrians and zero visibility conditions caused by thick fogs. The only airport in Cordillera, however, remained open to chartered and military flights.

To boost the city’s economy and tourism industry, the local government pushed various efforts to rehabilitate, upgrade, and eventually reopen the airport.

Through the initiative of City Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong, the Department of Transportation (DOTR) and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) allocated P68 million for the realization of said purpose.

For public safety, the 150-meter width from the center of the airport, or 75 meters on both sides, was declared by the CAAP as the buffer zone, as earlier reported by the Public Information Office of Baguio.

With the preparations in place, PAL issued its travel advisory on the new route that will ‘allow hassle-free travel to the City of Pines from the Queen City of the South, and vice versa, in just two hours.’

Cebu-Baguio-Cebu flights, according to the airline, will operate four times a week, with convenient morning departures.

PR 2230 Cebu-Baguio will operate every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. It will depart in Mactan Cebu at 08:50 AM and will arrive at Baguio Loakan Airport at 10:50 AM.

Meanwhile, PR 2231 Baguio-Cebu which will depart at Loakan Airport at 11:50 AM and will arrive in Cebu by 1 PM, is scheduled every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.

PAL encouraged the public to check their website, www.philippineairlines.com for travel requirements and advisories.

“We’re happy to be back in Baguio, PAL’s very first destination! Our Manila-Baguio flight on March 15, 1941 marked the dawn of the aviation age for the Philippines – and for Asia. Thank you and see you on our flights soon,” expressed the airline.
