Tinglayan, Kalinga – Forty-eight volunteer responders in the locality, in which the majority are students, can now respond to distress calls that may happen in the municipality after being equipped with skills in First Aid and Basic Life Support.

The training spearheaded by the local government of Tinglayan in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross - Kalinga and Mountain Province Chapter was held in the municipality from July 5-7, 2023.

The goal of the training, according to Larae Lactao of Tinglayan is to bring rescue services closer to the people, considering the topography of Tinglayan, where it is impossible to respond immediately in times of emergency.

“Importante nga adda iti trained responders within the barangay itself nga isu ti umuna nga ag-aid kadagidiay victims/patient,” she said.

Aside from students, teachers from various schools in the locality and personnel of the LGU also underwent said training.

When asked about the concepts and skills taught by the trainers, Lactao relayed that the trained responders were first provided with lectures regarding the objectives, legal concerns, and emergency action principles of first aid and basic life support training before they were involved in hands-on activities.

Said activities include the steps in first aid management for cardiac emergencies and common emergencies such as choking, shock, close and open wounds, and burn.

Also, bandaging, splinting, patient packaging, and proper lifting of patients were taught to the trainees.

Meanwhile, Mayor Sacrament Gumilab expressed gratitude to Red Cross Kalinga and Mt. Province Chapter led by Raffy Liwanfor spearheading the training, stressing that the activity is of great significance for the municipality.

“It is a must to have trained individuals in the municipality to do the rescue when uncontrolled circumstances happen, thus the need for such activity in our locality,” he stressed.
