Tabuk City, Kalinga – Data from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG-Kalinga) showed P50 million in cash assistance was given to the farmers affected by El Nino in the province in 2023-2024 alone.

Based on the accomplishment report of OPAG obtained by the Guru Press Cordillera on August 13, 5,000 farmers in Kalinga benefited from the cash aid given under the Presidential Assistance to Farmers and Fisherfolk and their Families (PAFFF).

PAFFF is an initiative of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. that aims to address the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon, severely affecting the country’s agriculture and fishery sectors, leading to economic instability in vulnerable communities.

Most beneficiaries were from Tabuk City, with 1,328. This is followed by Pinukpuk with 1,128; Tanudan with 885; Balbalan with 747; Pasil, 557; Rizal, 337; and Tinglayan, 18.

In an interview, OPAG Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Sol G. Lawagan said the beneficiaries received P10,000 each during the distributions conducted from 2023 to 2024.

“Financial assistance amounting to 10,000 pesos each was given to the farmers through the help of PAFFF; the requirements needed from them are that they must be registered in the RSBSA and were affected by the drought season,” said Lawagan.

The recipients of the cash aid were El Niño-affected farmers registered for the Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA). They received the assistance after the agency’s evaluation.

The given cash was intended to help the beneficiaries buy agricultural supplies such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, or basic farm tools, among others, all aimed to help them cope with their losses due to the drought.
