San Pablo, Isabela- The peaceful morning of fishing turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when a 62-year-old man, catching some fish, drowned along the Cagayan River in Isabela.

The victim, identified by the authorities as Alejandro Pentrante, a resident of San Pablo, Isabela, was found lifeless around 9:00 a.m. this Friday, May 16, by the members of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO-San Pablo).

Based on the information shared by Police Lieutenant Froilan Farinas to XFM-Santiago, Alejandro drowned when he decided to go into a deep portion of the river in Barangay Auitan, San Pablo.

He was with his friend, also a 62-year-old fisherman, when the drowning incident transpired. According to the victim’s companion, Alejandro quickly sank because he did not know how to swim.

Notified of the incident, the responding authorities proceeded immediately to the river to rescue Alejandro. Despite the swift response, he was already dead when he was retrieved by the rescuers.

The investigation conducted by the police revealed that the portion of the river where the old man drowned used to be a quarry site, which the two were unfamiliar with.
