Updated: Aug 10, 2021

Tabuk City, Kalinga – An 8-year-old boy drowned in the irrigation canal in Bulanao Centro, Tabuk City around 2 o’clock in the afternoon today, August 9, and still missing.

The victim was identified as Shayne Natarte of Bulanao Centro.

According to Kalinga Police Provincial Director Police Col. Davy Limmong, the victim went for a swim with his 10-year-old brother and another boy.

Initial report taken from the PDRRMC related that the boys put a rope and tied it on both ends of the canal as a means of safety. They held on to the rope while swimming in the canal. Unfortunately, Sheyne was not able to hold tight on the rope.

The report said the elder brother tried to help the victim grasping the victim's hand but eventually lost hold due to the strong current.

The elder brother of the victim immediately went to his grandmother to inform her of the incident. They tried to look for the boy but later decided to call for rescuers.

In a Facebook post of a relative of the victim, she asked for more help from people to find the body of the drowned kid.

Meantime, as of 7 pm, the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, citizens, and others were still currently conducting a search, rescue, and retrieval operation.

Unfortunately, the body is not yet found.
