At Just 7, Isabela Math wizard wins silver medal at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad

Aurora, Isabela – Seven-year-old math prodigy Amanda Uy has brought pride to her family and the Province of Isabela after winning a silver medal at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO) in Bangkok, Thailand.

TIMO is an annual international mathematics competition designed to promote mathematical learning and problem-solving skills among young students from around the world. The event was held from February 6 to 8, 2026, at Impact Muang Thong Thani.

The competition tests core mathematical topics, including logical thinking, arithmetic, algebra, number theory, geometry, and combinatorics, challenging participants to apply creative and analytical reasoning to solve complex problems.

According to an interview with local media, Mayor Joseph Christian “Niño” Uy said Amanda dedicated months of daily preparation for the competition. Her hard work and determination paid off, allowing her to earn a silver medal in her very first international math competition.

“All the hard work Amanda put in really paid off, especially since this was her very first international competition,” Uy said.

Uy also expressed regret for not being able to attend the competition, as it coincided with a Medical and Surgical Mission in Aurora. He jokingly added that Amanda seems to have inherited her mathematical talent from her mother—remarking that if she had inherited it from him, she might have even won gold.

Amanda’s achievement is a testament not only to her dedication and talent but also to the potential of young Filipino learners to shine on the international stage. Her success has brought pride to her family, her community, and her province, inspiring other children to pursue excellence in academics and follow their passions.
