Bontoc, Mountain Province – All major activities of the much-anticipated 19th Lang-ay Festival of Mountain Province have been officially canceled following the declaration of a State of National Energy Emergency (SNEE).

The SNEE was declared by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on March 24 to address threats to the country’s energy supply amid rising global instability, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Scheduled to take place from April 6 to 12, 2026, the festival’s major events—including street dancing, cultural competitions, trade fairs, concerts, and sports activities—have been called off due to their high demand for logistics, travel, and energy consumption.

To address the situation, Governor Bonifacio Lacwasan Jr. issued an executive order directing all provincial offices, municipalities, and agencies to refrain from planning or sponsoring festival events this year, except for essential public services.

The order also stated that the province will still mark its 59th Founding Day on April 7 with simple activities focused on reflection and cultural appreciation instead of large-scale celebrations.

Meanwhile, funds originally allocated for the festival may be redirected to essential services and high-priority initiatives, particularly those addressing the impacts of the energy crisis. While the festival remains an important part of the province’s culture, the current situation calls for prudent energy use.

The cancellation has drawn mixed reactions, especially from residents of Mountain Province, with many expressing both disappointment and support for the government’s decision.

“Sayang but it's for the best,” one commenter said. “Ay sayang yung event dahil sa crisis sa langis,” another added.

Despite the disappointment over the festival’s cancellation, provincial officials and residents alike recognize the importance of prioritizing energy conservation and public welfare during the ongoing national emergency.
