Baguio City, Philippines – Among local government units in the region, the city government of Baguio has been the first to openly confirm their plan of buying Covid-19 vaccines using their local fund for their constituents.

LGUs which include Pasig, Manila, Mandaluyong, Valenzuela, Caloocan, Marikina, San Juan, and Navotas have been reported to have allocated funds for said cause.

According to PIO Baguio, the city government is targeting to allocate some P100 million from their budget to pursue buying Covid-19 vaccine.

The report further said that a total of 200,000 doses of the vaccine were already committed to Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong by two international companies.

Local companies including the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry and several Philippine Export Zone Authority (PEZA) locators, among others also confirmed giving 33,000 doses to the city government.

The mayor has already ordered the members of the city’s Local Finance Committee to source out enough funds which will be needed in buying the vaccine for approval by the city council.

Freezers which are needed for storage of the vaccines are also expected to arrive on the first week next month; these are needed for the preservation of the vaccines.

In a statement by the mayor during the first flag raising ceremony of the city this year, he said that when the vaccines come, they shall prioritize frontliners, elderly, people with underlying conditions and those workers directly exposed to the virus.
