Baguio City, Philippines – A 25-year-old gardener from Barangay Happy Hallow, Baguio City engaged in high-value crops production, particularly highland vegetables was installed on Monday, May 2, 2022, as the farmer-director for this month and shall assume the roles and responsibilities of a Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture.
In line with DA’s Memorandum Order dated March 27, 2017, Ryan Palunan can now execute his role as the Regional Director in implementing key programs of the agency in the Cordillera. His functions however are limited only to non-policy determining activities.
Non-policy-making activities include being the presiding Management Committee (ManCom) during meetings and holding dialogues with Local Government Units (LGUs) in consultation with Regional Director Dr. Cameron Odsey, monitoring programs and projects, among others.
The Agricultural Department said that this designation supports the recognition of farmers and fisherfolks as key players in agricultural and rural development and is done annually alongside the celebration of the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s month.
In a statement, the Regional Agricultural and Fishery Council (RAFC) – Cordillera commended Palunan for his designation underscoring one of DA Secretary William Dar’s previous statements that “the Filipino youth is the key driver of ensuring the attainment of food-secured and resilient Philippine Agriculture, leading to a better performing economy today and in the succeeding years.”
The council also noted that with the participation of the youth in the decision-making process in the field of Agriculture, they can show their fellow youth that farming can be a rewarding career, highlighting the important role of agriculture on a global scale.
Meantime, aside from being the RAFC Executive Chairperson, Palunan also chairs the Regional Sectoral Committee on Youthpreneur and also the Regional 4H-Club President in the region.
