BALBALAN, Kalinga — Mayor Almar Malannag urged iBalbalan athletes to carry the spirit of binnadang and uphold Kalinga core values as they compete, reminding them that success extends beyond winning medals.

“Carry with you the spirit of ‘Binnadang,’ helping one another, and the value of Paniyaw/Ngilin kan Ba-in—respect and responsibility. These values will take you further than any finish line,” Malannag said.

Malannag delivered the message to athletes who competed in the 2026 Balbalan Municipal Meet on September 5-6, where participants battled for 138 medals and slots to represent the municipality in the Kalinga Provincial Athletic Meet.

The mayor reminded the athletes that being a champion is not measured by medals alone but also by character, discipline and sportsmanship.

“When you train with purpose, compete with integrity, and honor your opponents, you bring pride to your families, to Balbalan, and to our country,” he said.

He also encouraged the young athletes to believe in themselves and their abilities.

“Aanak di yBalbalan, believe in yourselves. You are today’s athletes—and with faith, hard work, and teamwork—you will be tomorrow’s global pride,” Malannag said.

Beyond competition, Malannag emphasized the importance of applying the values learned through sports in everyday life, including cooperation, respect and responsibility.

The mayor also recognized the coaches and teachers who train, support and accompany the athletes in competitions.

He likewise thanked DepEd Balbalan, the LGU Balbalan, the athletes’ families, communities, technical officials and other personnel whose efforts contributed to the successful conduct of the municipal meet.
