Bontoc, Mountain Province – The local government of Bontoc on October 4 gave recognition and awarded cash incentives to its Top 3 Most Functional Senior Citizen Associations, highlighting their celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week (EFW) slated on October 1 to 7.

In a press release of Bontoc municipality, the search reveals that Barangay Tocucan emerged as the champion and was bestowed P10,000 as a cash prize. Second place is Caneo Barangay Senior Citizen Association that received P7,000, while P5,000 was given to Caluttit Barangay Senior Citizen Association as the third placer.

Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Araceli Shane Bayanos explained that the program intends to encourage the elderly ‘to plan and carry out activities for self-enhancement and community development and recognize the efforts and participation of the senior citizen sector of the municipality.’

The program likewise serves as a way to ‘assist the elderly in availing the benefits they are entitled from the government, non-government agencies, and other entities.’

Submitted entries were judged for the projects and programs undertaken for the welfare and benefit of the members and the community; interaction and involvement with the LGU, national government agencies, private sectors, and other stakeholders; clear and established policies in the government and management of the organization; and other criteria approved or deemed necessary by the committee.

Bayanos said that the giving of incentives and awards to the sector is part of the Senior Citizens Code of Bontoc.

The code rules that ‘any barangay unit which wins first place three consecutive times shall be disqualified to compete again in the same category for the next succeeding year. However, the said barangay unit shall be elevated to the “hall of fame” achievement with a corresponding Certificate of Recognition.’

Municipal Mayor Franklin Odsey, along with senior citizen Viola Okko, who took presumed as mayor for a day, and Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) Head, Ruby Mangagley, awarded the incentives.

With said development, the MSWD Officer hopes for a full participation of all barangay senior citizen associations in the search for next year.
