Cagayan Mayor’s alleged link to suspect of Peñablanca Police ambush being investigated


Cagayan, Philippines – The Philippine National Police is now investigating alleged connection of a mayor in the province to the suspect behind the ambush of Deputy Chief of Police PLT Randy Baccay on November 26.


It could be recalled that Baccay was shot after group of individuals fired bullets while he and his men were checking the reported illegally sawn lumbers piled along the river bank in Sitio Dalayat, Barangay Minanga, Peñablanca.


According to the press release of Cagayan Police Provincial Office, the uniformed men were able to seek cover from the rocks but Baccay was hit on the second gun burst.


The exchange of bullets between the police and the armed individuals lasted for at least 20 minutes and Baccay was immediately rushed to the hospital in Tuguegarao City after the firing incident.


With this, the Police Regional Office 2 immediately conducted a manhunt operation that led to the arrest of a certain Ernest Sibbaluca, 45, married, businessman, and a resident of Barangay Minanga.


Based on the report of Cagayan Provincial Information Office, there was an intelligent report that Sibbaluca is allegedly a man of a certain mayor in Cagayan. This is now being validated by the police.


Moreover, in an earlier report, the suspect told the police that he was with nine other men. Sibbaluca along with the others are now facing cases of Qualified Direct Assault, Attempted Murder and Multiple Attempted Murder.


Meantime, PLT Baccay received Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting from Police Regional Office 2 Director, PBGEN Crizaldo Nieves while he was at the hospital.


Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Debold Sinas also instructed Nieves to extend P50,000 financial assistance to Baccay.
