Updated: Aug 13, 2021

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The 13 undocumented piglets confiscated on July 28, 2021, in Bulanao Centro were culled on August 11 after they were tested positive for African Swine Fever (ASF).

The Kalinga Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) reports that out of the 13 blood samples collected, 10 were tested ASF positive based on laboratory test results by the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera Administrative Region.

As recalled, the piglets were confiscated from a trader after they could not show any proper documents for transporting and selling the piglets.

“Awan pulos ti papeles da, even with 24 hours nga naikkan da ti oras nga mangiproduce ti papeles da ket awan pulos inproduce da,” Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Mariano Dunwan said.

The piglets, he said, were from Ballesteros, Cagayan.

Upon confiscation, the piglets were brought to the custody of the PVO for observation.

“In-inut da a natay ket adda 13 nga nagbati. Tatta nga adda ti resulta, awan ti mabalin nga aramiden mi, we have to schedule depopulation or culling ta talaga nga nag-positive da,” the Provincial Veterinarian explained in an interview.

Based on ASF guidelines, depopulation is recommended to the remaining stocks upon the confirmation of the result.

The office, with Bulanao Centro barangay officials and representative of the Provincial Legal Office, euthanized and buried all remaining piglets at the government vacant lot near the PVO with the proper disinfection process.

To prevent the spread of said animal disease in the province, the provincial government is appealing to the public to report the entry of undocumented pig traders as well as pork products in the province.
