Cordilleran athletes won 16 medals at International Karate Competition

Bontoc, Mt. Province - Young athletes from Cordillera were able to secure 16 medals during the JKA International Traditional Karate Open held on June 14- 16, 2024 in Marikina City.

 

The International Traditional Karate Open is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious karate competitions. It was organized by the Japan Karate Association (JKA). The event highlights the spirit of sportsmanship and excellence within the karate community.

 

A total of 430 athletes from different countries participated in this year’s competition. Twenty-one of them were from Bontoc, Natonin, Sagada, and Besao, Mt. Province.

 

They were members of the Japan Karate Association Nihon Karate Kyokai (JKA NKK) - Northern Luzon Mt. Province Chapter.

In the event, the young athletes showed their skills in karate martial arts, winning 2 gold, 2 silver, and 12 bronze medals as a team although it was their first time to compete at the international level.

 

Among the players who secured medals for the team were Kevin Roy Kapawen, Khyzer Hans Kapawen, Kay-an Pangowen,  Merwil Athena Awichen Wap,Xyreen Ingson, Wilbur Tay-og Wap, Thalia Onnon, Joyce Lyn Fongsi,  Ckiel Valencerina, Myeisha Po-or, Ruby Payacda, Lyesha Ofoob,Kien Aguirre,and Braezen Eli Tabuena.

 

The team already set a date to make a courtesy visit to Governor Bonifacio Lacwasan, Jr. and other sponsors for the said event, as a way of appreciating them.
