Cordilleran, Cagayano police killed in a clash with NPA in Northern Samar

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Policemen from Mt. Province and Cagayan were the recent casualties of an armed encounter with members of the New People’s Army in Northern Samar.


Patrolman Franklin Marquez from Balaoa, Tadian and Patrolman Jimmy Caraggayan from Annafunan East, Tuguegarao City were hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) during an encounter on Saturday, November 20 in Barangay Lonoy, Gamay.


According to the Philippine National Police, the two enforcers who are currently undergoing Special Action Force Commando Course with other policemen were alerted by the local Barangay Information Network about the presence of armed men in their area.


The government troops engaged in a firefight with the rebels, who detonated IEDs against the police that killed two and injured four of the responding enforcers.


Follow-up investigations for the possible arrest of the suspected members of New People’s Army are being conducted.

Meantime, financial assistance shall be provided by the PNP to the families of Caraggayan and Marquez and medical aid will be given to the four injured police officers.


On their Facebook page, the PNP expressed sympathy to the bereaved families of the killed uniformed personnel.


“We express our condolences to the families of Pat. Franklin Marquez at Pat. Jimmy Caraggayan. Our snappy salute to the bravery they have shown. They were killed in the line of duty defending our country against insurgency. We would want to recognize the valor of four other troop members who were injured during the firefight,” Chief General Dionardo Carlos stated.
