CVMC recorded 324 cervical cancer cases in 2022

Updated: May 22, 2023

Cagayan, Philippines – Some 324 women were monitored by the Cagayan Valley Medical Center(CVMC) to have cervical cancer in 2022.

Cervical cancer was considered by the Department of Health as the second most frequent cancer among women ages 15 – 44 years old. The health agency noted that at least 12 Filipino women die of said disease every day.

This cancer affecting the lower and narrow end of the uterus was said to be caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) which is being acquired through sexual contact. Other factors that can cause cervical cancer include smoking, early sex life, multiple sexual partners, and multiple childbirths.

On May 15, CVMC Obstetrician Gynecologist, Dr. Janet Mahor-Chua reported through the Cagayan Provincial Information Office - Teleradyo that cervical cancer is the top one among the ‘cancers women reproductive tract’ at CVMC.

She added that 2% of the 324 succumbed to the disease.

Health officials in the province are currently going around vaccinating 9 – 14 years old against HPV. The said age group is the target population for said immunization as they are the ones who do not have sexual encounters yet.
