BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — A concerned resident’s quick decision to call the police helped prevent possible self-harm involving an 18-year-old student in Baguio City on Saturday, August 15.

According to a report from the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), as cited by several local media outlets, the concerned resident noticed the student standing near a bridge and became worried after observing his behavior.

Believing that the young man might be in danger, the resident immediately contacted the police and requested assistance.

Responding personnel from BCPO Stations 6 and 2 proceeded to the area and intervened, preventing the student from carrying out what authorities described as an apparent attempt to harm himself.

Authorities did not disclose the student’s identity to protect his privacy and welfare.

The incident highlighted the importance of paying attention to people who may be experiencing emotional distress and taking immediate action when someone appears to be in danger. In this case, a single phone call allowed police responders to reach the student before the situation could become more serious.

Public urged to seek help during emotional distress

Following the incident, authorities reminded the public to seek help when dealing with serious personal problems, emotional distress, or circumstances that may lead to thoughts of self-harm.

People who are experiencing emotional distress or are concerned about someone at risk may seek immediate assistance from trusted individuals, mental health professionals, or emergency responders.

The NCMH Crisis Hotline provides free, confidential, 24/7 support in the Philippines at 1800-1888-1553.

The incident serves as a reminder that reaching out can make a difference. If someone appears to be in immediate danger, do not leave them alone and seek emergency assistance as soon as possible.
