DA says it is finding means to address fertilizer price hike

La Trinidad, Benguet – The Department of Agriculture said they are looking for ways to address the increase in fertilizer prices that have irked Benguet farmers.

Benguet farmers have been complaining about the excessive increase in prices of fertilizers, saying it exacerbates their farming condition as prices of their produce in the market decline due to the influx of smuggled vegetables.

DA, in their press release on January 19, explained that 'the rising cost of fertilizer is due to the liberalization of trade in fertilizers; the country as a net importer of fertilizers strengthened global fertilizer demand; increased prices of raw materials; and increased transport and logistical costs.'

DA said they are helping the farmers look for some measures to address their concern.

The agency related they have strengthened the Rice, High Value Crops Development and Organic Programs to assist farmers by encouraging them to use foliar and granular fertilizers such as Parker Neem Cake, Calcium Nitrate. The programs were likewise designed to provide training on how to make natural fertilizers.

DA said the use of fortified organic fertilizers, such as processed chicken manure, will help decrease farmers’ dependence on expensive synthetic fertilizers.

Meanwhile, Benguet farmers, through Mt. Province Broadcasting Corporation, asserted that the problem with the suggestions is that they cannot provide their vegetable produce better nourishment to grow abundantly.

They added that there is not enough supply of fortified organic fertilizers to dispense their entire gardens either.
