Balbalan, Kalinga – Outperforming 13 other barangays in town for the Street Dance Competition during the celebration of the Manchatchatong Festival, Barangay Dao-angan received P25,000 cash prize from the municipal government.

On March 4, 14 barangays performed for said competition along the street of Barangay Salegseg starting from the public market and heading to Balbalan Central School grounds. A ground presentation was likewise held following the parade.

Apart from the dance showdown, contingents of said contest displayed costumes and hand-held props that were inspired by their own traditions, ideals, and travel destinations.

Among all contingents, Barangay Dao-angan street dancers shone the most, thus declared as this year’s winner for the street dance competition.

Barangay Poblacion came in second getting a cash prize of P20, 000 while Barangay Balbalan Proper placed 3rd with a cash prize of P15,000.

The remaining 11 participating barangays received P10,000 each as consolation prizes.

Home to 7 indigenous sub-tribes - Salegseg, Banao, Dao-angan, Poswoy, Mabaca, Buaya, and the Gubang sub-tribe, Balbalan comprises 14 barangays.

As Indigenous Peoples, festivities in the municipality are held in line with the 7 sub tribe’s customary practices, thus the inclusion of a dance presentation by said indigenous sub-tribes highlighting their own culture and traditions.
