Family of 3 typhoon casualties in Benguet given aid, cash assistance

La Trinidad, Benguet – The family of the three siblings who died after a landslide that almost buried their house in Central Purok Ubbog, Ambiong at around 8 PM on October 11 received on Tuesday, October 12, psychological first aid and cash assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development- Cordillera (DSWD-CAR).

The psychological first aid was provided hoping to reduce the stress symptoms of the Teligo family and assist them towards healthy recovery following the traumatic event brought by Typhoon Maring.

DSWD-CAR also provided P30,000 burial and financial assistance worth P10,000 to further help the Teligo family.

Also, food packs, ready-to-eat foods, and hygiene kits were also given to the family. The same items were received by six other families living in the neighborhood who were also hit by the landslide.

As recalled, the family just finished eating for dinner at 8 PM on Monday, October 11, when their house collapsed because of the landslide. They were rescued by their neighbors and were brought to the hospital, but sadly, two of them were declared dead on arrival. The other child was reported to be in critical condition but later passed away.

The parents, meantime, survived the incident. As narrated, they were evacuated to their nearest relative while the retrieval operation of the children was being done.

“Their grandfather led the operations, remembering the whereabouts of his grandchildren, which greatly contributed to hasten the process,” PIA-Benguet said in their report.

Meantime, aside from the children, other casualties were also reported in the region by the Office of the Civil Defense-Cordillera (OCDC). Among these are 2 from Itogon, Benguet and a 49-year-old man from Dominican Mirador, Baguio City.

As for those who suffered injuries, OCDC reports one from Buguias, Benguet; one from Itogon, Benguet; and one from Dominican Mirador, Baguio City.

For damage to properties, the agency said that conduct of Rapid Damage Assessment and Need Analysis is ongoing. These, they said, are being done by Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices.
