Former mayor of San Juan, Abra named new PCGG Commissioner

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

Abra, Philippines – Executive Secretary Lucas P. Bersamin administered on Monday the oath of office to the new Commissioner of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG).

PCGG is a body established to aid the government in recovering the alleged ill-gotten wealth from the family of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., investigating graft and corruption cases, and implementing safeguards against such practices.

The new PCGG Commissioner is Atty. Marco Magala Bautista from the province of Abra.

Who is Atty. Marco Bautista?

Bautista holds a degree in civil engineering from the University of Santo Tomas. He studied law at Far Eastern University and passed the BAR examinations in the 1990s.

From 1988 to 1989, he was employed as a Sheriff IV in the San Mateo Rizal Regional Trial Court while he was a professor at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

From 1991 to 1994, he served as Pasig City's Prosecuting Attorney II.

He then returned to Abra to work as the Abra Electric Cooperative’s General Manager from 1997 until 2007.

Bautista then campaigned for municipal mayor of San Juan, Abra where he served for three consecutive terms from 2007 to 2016.

In 2018, he was appointed as the Department of Tourism’s Undersecretary for Farm, Faith, Ecotourism, and Convergence Program, and also acted as the agency’s Undersecretary for Administration, Special Concern, and Convergence Program from 2018-2019.

In August 2022, he served as the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Undersecretary for the Disaster Response Management Group.

Now that he is the new PCGG Commissioner, Bautista is entrusted to give flesh and substance to the Constitutional mandate that “a public office is a public trust” by ensuring that graft and corruption shall not be repeated under any administration.

“All thanks and glory to God. It’s my honor and privilege to serve our country,” he expressed.
