Isabela, Philippines – Two members of the New People’s Army in Isabela were killed during a gunfight with the military Friday noon, October 29, in Diwagao Complex, Tappa, San Mariano.

Through the former rebels, the bodies of the slain cadres are identified as Alias Dave, the squad leader of Regional Sentro De Gravidad (RSDG), Komiteng Rehiyon Cagayan Valley (KRCV), and Alias Albert, a component of the same group.

The group was said to have been tasked to re-establish their lost mass base in San Mariano.

According to the 5th Infantry Division, the encounter happened when the government troops received information from the residents about the presence of a communist terrorist group in their area. When the uniformed men went to verify the tip given, they came across the group, who immediately fired their guns toward them.

The military returned fire, which resulted in a five-minute gunfight before the rebels retreated in various directions.

After the encounter, the troops immediately cleared the site where then, they discovered the dead bodies of Dave and Albert with two M16 rifles.

No one was injured on the part of the military.

Major General Laurence Mina, Commander of 5ID, stated that the support of the people in the fight against insurgency is a key factor in achieving the goal to end it.

"The support of the people is the key factor in achieving our goal of ending the insurgency. The prompt relay of information and the rapid reaction of the troops preempted the terroristic plans of the CTGs against the people. Let it be known that San Mariano is not a safe place for Terrorist NPAs to hide," he stated in the press release.
