Hypertension, top comorbidity of COVID-19 deaths in Cordillera

Baguio City, Philippines – Out of the 1,423 who succumbed due to Covid-19 in the region as of October 13, around 482 or 33.87 percent of them died because of hypertension as underlying comorbidity, making it the top comorbidity of COVID-19 deaths in Cordillera.


Assistant Regional Director Dr Amelita Pangilinan of the Department of Health-Cordillera revealed this in her report during the Kapihan sa Baguio held Thursday, October 14,2021.


Hypertension, also known as high or raised blood pressure, according to World Health Organization, is a condition in which the blood vessels have persistently raised pressure. WHO mentioned that this is a serious medical condition since it can increase the risk of heart, brain, and kidney diseases, among others.


As told by the organization, 1.13 billion persons worldwide have hypertension, making it a major cause of premature death worldwide, indicating a ratio of 1 in every 4 men and 1 in every 5 women.

Aside from hypertension, diabetes mellitus was also identified as a leading cause of death, of which 252 COVID-19 deaths in CAR were known to be suffering from said disease. Death due to heart disease is recorded at 135, while other comorbidities mentioned include kidney disease (87), lung disease (62), cancer (30) and asthma (24).


As of this writing, DOH-CAR listed 1,428 COVID-19 related deaths in the region in which 543 is from Baguio City, 448 from Benguet, 109 from Mt. Province, 104 from Kalinga, 94 in Abra, 81 in Ifugao and 49 from Apayao.


Meantime, the Department of Health Cordillera is reminding the public to continue protecting their selves and their family by abiding with the minimum public health standards and get vaccinated for free if eligible.
