Isabela youth create art work from rice grains

Updated: May 8, 2023

Is rice only designed to be taken in by people? You might want to think again as young individuals in Isabela utilized grains of rice, not just for consumption but also to produce ‘out of the box’ pieces of work.

These pieces left people in awe during the Bambanti Festival of the Province of Isabela from January 23 to 28. They stood out due to their uniqueness and creativity since these artworks were not only just painted or drawn.

The figures and images were made and produced through grains of rice.

Start of the project

In his Facebook post, Giovani Garinga, the founder of the group relayed that he, along with Michael Angelo Guiang, were asked to work on the Bambanti Agri-eco booth and to make the giant scarecrow for the Municipality of Ramon.

“We thought of showcasing something different, something out of the box and something that would speak,” he wrote.

Having visualized something beyond ordinary, the project required more manpower to be finished on time. For this reason, Garinga hired more out-of-school youth and even students to work with his team in their free time.

Creating jobs for the youth

While working with these young minds, Garinga noticed their passion and dedication as they even stayed up all night just to meet the deadline.

“As we finish a panel of the rice art, what I could see isn't just an artwork but pure hard work, passion, and dedication of our young artists who at some point are working 24 hours just to meet the deadline,” he recalled.

With these young ones’ hard work, the Rice Art Nation group was born which will continue to create rice artworks and will continue to give jobs to the out-of-school youth and even to students who want to do part-time.
