Tabuk City, Kalinga – The Itorkao Professionals Association (IPA) on Saturday, February 20, 2021 held its annual blood-letting collecting 450cc of blood each form 67 donors from the province of Kalinga.

This is the sixth year the association has conducted its blood-letting as their means to contribute to blood reserves to respond to the needs of Ykalingas when it comes to emergencies.

According to former Vice-governor and IPA member James Edduba, most of the donors were ‘repeat donors’ or those who have already donated blood in the previous years.

20 percent of the blood collected during the activity, he said, is intended for members and relatives of IPA members and the remaining volume shall be given to Red Cross, one of their partner agencies.

“We signed a MOA with Red Cross and in the MOA signed, we will only get 20 percent of the blood that will be collected today, the rest will go to Red Cross,” he said.

“We were thankful because we were able to do it right now kasi idi tiyempo ti lockdown, diba two weeks tayu naglockdown, madanagan kami ta baka han agproceed ket idi tinawagan mi ti KSU, okay da met, they provided us space tapnu mamaintain diay social distancing as part of the protocols,” he added.

Story Behind the Activity

The IPA annual blood-letting started during the first term of Edduba, which came from a personal experience when his nephew needed blood due to Dengue.

“Adda daydiay kaanakak tatta nga adda idiay PNP, idi highschool pailang ni Ashley, nagdengue idi so until such time nga from Taclubao impan da idiay Tugueguerao, naICU kasi mga 7 laeng sa ti nabati nga platelete na , agsasangit idi da lolak ken dagidiay kakabsat na so when I was there, nalagip ku idi ngay nakitak diay chapel diay St. Paul napan nak idiay, inluwaluk kunak , please biyagem lang daytuy kaanakak apu, I’ll make it a point nga agbalin nga personal mission ko daytuy panggep ti dara (blood-letting activity),” he narrated.

Doctor Aldrin Siwao later referred the case to Cagayan Valley Medical Center which provided them 14 bags of platelets. This, according to him saved the life of his nephew.

After this event, he mobilized the blood-letting activity in Pasil and invited the blood extraction team of CVMC as they are the only ones that time who are permitted to conduct blood extraction.

“So from there, nu maminsan ket tallu aldaw kami ket mga 15 lang ti maala mi, and then we went to a point na barangay olympics, blood olympics kuna mi nga am-amin nga barangay, nu sinu ti kaadwan, ikkan mi iti price, adda pay diay namingsan nga desktop ti inprice mi kadagiti barangays tapnu laeng adda maala,” he continued.

Because of that, Edduba made it as a yearly activity on his birthday to have the blood-letting activity.
