Tabuk City, Kalinga―Local Government Units (LGUs) are advised to utilize the issued Geohazard maps for disaster preparedness measures amidst the CoViD-19 pandemic to come up with a more responsive plan.

Officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) through the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office are reiterating the use of said geohazard maps since these were developed by MGB which present data and information on areas susceptible to rain-induced landslides and flooding in the province that is vital in developing policies for disaster and response plans.

According PENRO Officer Noel Barrientos, copies of the geohazard maps were already furnished to the provincial, municipalities, and the city LGUs in the province for their reference in undertaking precautionary measures.

“We have already provided all the local government units for their reference and guidance, and have conducted information dissemination regarding the content of geohazard map,” he said.

Kalinga is prone to the occurrences of flash floods and landslides since the terrain or physical feature of the province is mountainous, he adds.

In terms of flooding, Barangays Cabaruan, Laya West and other low lying areas of Tabuk City experienced this during heavy downpour of rains.

While the upper municipalities, Tinglayan, Lubuagan, Pasil, and Balbalan, are identified as prone to landslides because of their steep slopes.

Barrientos calls on all local leaders to make use of the geohazard maps to their areas of responsibilities for them to boost their disaster management and avoid the destruction of life and properties.

“Diyay ti kayat mi dawaten iti publiko as well as our local leaders nga implement da diyay geohazard map, observe da tapno ma-prevent tayo dagiti possible disasters that may occur,” he said.

This is also in line with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) directive urging all barangays to use the Geohazard Threat Advisories issued by the DENR-MGB as bases in formulating and updating their contingency plans to enhance operational readiness in responding to disasters even during a pandemic.
