Tabuk City, Kalinga – This is a testament and a manifestation that together, as one yKalinga, we can achieve so much.

This is what Tinglayan Mayor Sacrament Gumilab has to say after receiving on Monday, April 24, their P600,000 cash incentive for registering the highest number of gong players and pot dancers during the “Awong Chi Gangsa, Agtu’n Chi Banga” (The Call of a Thousand Gongs, The Dance of a Thousand Pots), the highlight of the 28th Kalinga Province Founding Anniversary and 4th Bodong Festival on February 15, 2023.

On the historic feat, Kalinga was able to set the Guinness World Record for “largest gong ensemble” with a 3,440 official count and 4,681 dancers for the “largest banga dance”.

To gather the people of Kalinga from all the municipalities is no joke. It took a lot of effort of local officials of various levels. To encourage participation, Kalinga PLGU thought of a reward scheme in the provincial level.

With their town leader participating in the feat, many yTinglayans were inspired to join, braving the scorching heat of the sun and the rain during their practices and actual performance.

Their efforts paid off as the provincial government under the leadership of Governor James Edduba, along with the department heads, finally awarded their prize over two months after the feat.

Mayor Gumilab, Vice Mayor Rogelio Tambalong, and other municipal officials received two checks worth P300,000 each for the highest number of gong players and pot dancers. The number of the players and dancers from the municipality, however, was not disclosed by the province.

In his talk, Gumilab thanked Kalinga PLGU and asked for their continued support of their leadership.

The award, he said, is a testament to the cooperation and participation of his constituents to the call of the province to ‘actively participate in the historic display of our culture which garnered international recognition.’

“This “Awong chi Gangsa, Agtun chi Banga” showed the whole world of the unity and collaboration of the different municipalities and the city of the province to achieve this milestone in our history,” the mayor added.
