Less fortunate COVID-19 patients find their hero

Not all those who were stricken by the Covid-19 virus are financially able to medicate themselves or avail of treatment, but some found their hero - the selfless acts of generosity of the Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists, Baguio Benguet Mountain Province (PSA BBMP) Chapter is a proof that indeed, not all heroes wear capes.

True to their motto of being proactive and being a mobilizer by helping whenever they can, PSA BBMP Chapter has been saving lives of COVID-19 low income confined families and their fellow healthcare workers in the midst of the pandemic.

Among the grantees is a single mom who recently gave birth. She also happened to be a COVID-19 patient.

Knowing her struggle, the compassionate society came to her rescue. Essentials such as milk, diapers, baby clothes from Dr. Kristine Laurencio, and others were provided in an instant.

In an interview with Dr. Deneb Stella Abastilla-Davalan, the President of the society as of 2018-2019, she initiated the “Adopt a Low Income COVID-19 Confined Families” last September. By that time, Leimara Phi asked for donations of milk and diapers for COVID-confirmed pedia patients whose families are under the low income bracket.

“I haven't really met Lei but our coordination started since ECQ. When I was the COMELEC Chair of BBMS (Baguio Benguet Medical Society), I spearheaded the face shield production while she was active with RAB,” recalls Dr. Abastilla-Davalan.

It can be remembered that the society also made improvised PPEs when there was a difficulty accessing medical grade PPEs.

“I also headed the PPE production of PPA BBMP where we had the program “Adopt a Healthcare Worker.” We raised funds and a total of 1226 PPEs were given to Anesthesiologists & some MDS, or/endo/sicu/neuro nurses, housekeeping, linen, transport aides of SLUSHS, NCDH, PCDH, and BGHMC,” she added.

The society did not stop helping from there. Dr. Abastilla-Davalan shared she coordinated for Logistics from Scout Rangers in order for donations to reach different provinces here in Cordillera, La Union, and Pangasinan.

As of now, their focus is with the Adopt a Low Income COVID-19 Confined Families program.

“Anesthesiologists donated cash so we can buy the essentials of the low income COVID. So this single mom and baby is not the first whom we have helped. We have minimal cash so its really the very needy whom we help,” says Dr. Abastilla-Davalan.

Those who are willing to donate can deposit to Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists, Baguio Benguet Mt. Province Chapter Inc. through BPI account number 8120-0025-55 and send deposit slips to the messenger of Dr. Juvel Fernandez or Dr. Darius Ramos.

They are also accepting milk, bottled water, diapers, clothes, and toys for kids. Just drop the items at Anesthesia offices of BGHMC or SLU, care of resident in duty.
