‘Long-term solution against Marijuana is possible’ – Tinglayan Mayor Gumilab

Tinglayan, Kalinga – Mayor Sacrament Gumilab is hopeful that there exists a long-term solution to the marijuana cultivation problem in Tinglayan, Kalinga.

He emphasized that with the whole government approach to the problem, a more comprehensive answer to address the problem is possible providing people involved with sustainable and dignified livelihood.

Gumilab noted this during the Consultation Meeting and Dialogue with the Local Government Unit and Elders of Tinglayan on October 20, 2022 at the Open Gym in Poblacion.

“With these [different line agencies], I know that we would be able to find a lasting solution to this problem that would not compromise the livelihood of the people, on the other hand, it would provide sustainable livelihood for them so that they would … have no other reason to cling on to this marijuana cultivation,” he said.

Gumilab acknowledged that marijuana has been around in Tinglayan even before he was born. He said it is undeniable that it became the livelihood of some people. Nevertheless, he believes solutions are available.

Gumilab recalled that in 2016, government authorities together with the LGU climbed the mountains where marijuana plantations were in order to have a dialogue with the cultivators. They spent three days and three nights and were able to agree on plans to end the cultivation of marijuana.

However, the program ended with the planning phase.

This time, the mayor expressed optimism that the long-standing problem on marijuana in the municipality will finally be resolved through the zeal and passion of the different line agencies including Congressman Allen Jesse Mangaoang.

The proposed concerted effort and formation of a task-force which involves barangay officials is seen by the Mayor as a promising means to rally all agencies in supporting individuals and families in their transition to farming crops, breeding cattle or producing goods or products and finally leave marijuana cultivation for good.

“So I hope, with our people here, we’ll be able to end this planning so that tomorrow we will be able to implement the plan for the betterment of the people of Tinglayan, Kalinga and Cordillera,” he said.
