Tabuk City, Kalinga – The Chairperson of Committee on Indigenous Cultural Communities and Indigenous Peoples Allen Jesse Mangaoang is set to launch a signature drive during the celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Month 2022 to bolster efforts towards the attainment of self-rule.

Said event is in pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1906 series of 2009, declaring October as National Indigenous Peoples Month, and enjoining the people “in the celebration and preservation of Indigenous Cultural Communities as part of the Life of the Nation.”

The signature campaign will be among the highlight of the celebration, informed by Regino Wacas of the Office of Congressman on a local radio program on Wednesday, September 27.

“Addan tu ti manifesto because maysa nga objective tayo ket agconduct tayo ti signature drive nga adda ti maipasa nga papel, pirmaan tayo ta isu manen iti ilatag dagiti cocongressman tayo idiay Congress tatta,” said Wacas.

It can be recalled that majority of Cordillerans rejected autonomy in the two previous plebiscites in 1990 and 1998 due to so-called lack of holistic understanding.

The incumbent leaders however, have been enlightened of the greater benefits of self-governance and have since been pushing for its realization.

According to Wacas, they have coordinated with Regional Development Council (RDC) that is in-charge for autonomy information, education campaign (IEC) for them to issue a memorandum to the various line agencies and higher education institutions (HEIs) to participate in the upcoming regional summit that will be staged in Kalinga province.

In partnership with Kalinga State University, the summit will be held via zoom with some in-person programs.

The ceremonial opening of the program, disclosed Wacas, will be on October 17 and will culminate on October 31.

Suggested guest speakers of the event are Senator Maria Josefa Imelda "Imee" Marcos, Senate President Juan Miguel ''Migz'' Zubiri, and Senator Robinhood “Robin” Padilla.
