hKabugao, Apayao – Suspected New People’s Army guerrillas in Apayao lost more war armaments in a series of firefights with the military troops recently, further weakening their force.

From April 5 to April 10, soldiers and rebels believed to be members of the Regional Guerrilla Unit, Ilocos Cordillera Regional Committee, clashed four times in Barangay Maragat, Kabugao. The fourth encounter on April 10 prompted the government to launch a ‘precision airstrike’ against the remaining members of said group.

In the five-day operation, the troops on the ground recovered various war armaments which include three rifles, a grenade launcher, a pistol, rifle grenades, long and short magazines, and 22 pieces of improvised explosive devices.

Other items seized include electronic devices and other materials the rebels use for communication.

The military earlier claimed possible injuries on the rebels’ side due to the traces of blood found at the encounter sites and in the directions where the rebels withdrew.

5th Infantry Division Commander, Major General Gulliver Señires appealed to the Cordillerans to remain alert and to report to authorities should they see the remaining members of the Ilocos Cordillera Regional Committee in their area.
