Santa Praxedes, Cagayan – Though she believes that there is no foul play in what happened to her child, a grieving mother in Santa Praxedes, Cagayan denied claims that her son jumped off at the Macatel Falls resulting in his death.

In an interview with GURU Press Cordillera, Imelda Infiel said she is hesitant in believing that her 19-year-old son jumped off the falls since the victim did not get any injury in the head.

Based on initial reports from authorities, the victim decided to jump from the top of the falls when they were in the area for a picnic last Friday, May 17. While doing so, his head might have hit the rocks at the edge of the waterfall and later drowned.

Infiel belied the report and narrated that she personally went to the falls to check on his son after receiving news from a passerby that her son swam at the falls and no longer appeared afterwards.

His companions were not able to notice promptly what happened to the victim.

When she arrived at the falls, she was told that his son might only be hiding nearby. However, she noticed that his son’s slipper was floating in the water, alarming her.

“Sabi nila nagtago lang daw pero sinabi sa akin na andun ang tsinelas kaya kinabahan ako. Kaya pumunta talaga ako tapos andun, nakita ko ang tsinelas niya na lumutang kaya tinawag ko ang anak ko. Yun po hinanap [na siya], sinisid at andun [pala] sa ilalim ng tubig,” Infiel said.

A barangay tanod stationed in the area retrieved her son’s body.

The victim was later brought to the Rural Health Unit of Santa Praxedes but was declared dead on arrival.
