Baguio City, Philippines – On Monday, Oct. 16, a number of schools and universities in the Philippines have cancelled their classes as a transport group held a nationwide strike.

The strike dubbed as ‘tigil-pasada’ was led by the members of the Malayang Alyansa ng Bus Employees at Laborers (Manibela). This is in relation to the deadline set for the consolidation of traditional jeepneys in the country.

The movement prompted some local government units and universities like those in Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Pampanga, and Pangasinan to cancel classes. Some of the schools, however, held their sessions online on Monday.

Amidst the strike, educational institutions in Baguio City went on with their classes especially since transport groups in the city continued their daily operations and did not join the strike.

With this, Mayor Benjamin Magalong through the Baguio City Public Information Office thanked the jeepney drivers in the city for not joining again in the nationwide tigil-pasada.

"We express our gratitude to the public utility vehicle federation and associations for once again putting public service over their personal interests. Your selfless act of always honoring your role as providers of essential service to the riding public is truly commendable. Maraming salamat," he was quoted saying.
