Isabela, Philippines – The body of an alleged commander of Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army in the Cagayan Valley region, who was allegedly killed in a clash with the government troops, was recovered on Wednesday, March 17.

The Philippine Army identified the body as alias ‘Yuni’, the commander of the Regional Operations Command and the Regional Sentro De Gravidad, Komiteng Rehiyon-Cagayan Valley. ‘Yuni’ was fatally shot during an encounter with the 86th Infantry Battalion in San Mariano Sur, San Guillermo last March 15, the 5th Infantry Division (ID) reports.

The report stated that in an attempt to hide the commander from the government troops, his comrades brought him to Barangay Dingading in San Guillermo where they buried him in a shallow grave in the barangay’s hinterland.

With the help of the locals and in coordination with the SOCO and PNP of San Guillermo, the body was located and exhumed on March 17. Former rebels confirmed ‘Yuni’s’ identification.

5th ID Commander MGen. Laurence Mina said that the death of ‘Yuni’ is recorded as the 2nd high ranking rebel casualty within their area of responsibility this week.

“These losses will eventually cripple the armed group and weaken the terrorist organization caused by leadership vacuum. Again, we appeal to the remaining members of the NPA to lay down their arms and surrender… and the best time to do it, is now!” he underscored.

Who is ‘Yuni’

According to reports from the 5th ID, the slain rebel leader was the one who led the burning of million-worth heavy equipment and high-end utility vehicles of a mining firm in Barangay Dimaluadi, Dinapigue, Isabela on October 28, 2015.

He also allegedly commanded the hundred rebels who attacked the Maddela Police Station in Quirino on April 29, 2017 where a police officer was killed and firearms and uniforms were taken by the group.

And based on disclosure of former rebels and confiscated CPP-NPA documents, ‘Yuni’ was also a cadre known as alias ‘Dondie’ from the Regional Headquarters, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee before he was transferred to Region 2.
