Tabuk City, Kalinga – During the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) Family Day this December 15, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration-Cordillera along with the local government of Kalinga honored the heroism and invaluable contribution of the OFWs to the economy and development of the province and the country.

Governor Ferdinand Tubban, in his message represented by Kalinga Provincial Administrator Atty. William Puday Jr., underscored the strong remittance inflows provided by the OFWs that helped secure not only the basic needs of their families but also the economy of the country.

Tubban cited that in 2020 the total remittances reached $29.9 billion. The huge contribution, he said, adds fuel to the purchasing power and production and selling of goods in the country.

The governor likewise recognized the efforts of OWWA-Cordillera for organizing a day dedicated to the OFWs and their families, making way ‘to recognize their importance, to honor them, and to make their family members know that the government care for them.’

“Adda met ti kapamilya tayo nga agtratrabaho ti abroad… ket dakkel a sakripisyo. Saan da laeng agsakripisyo nga agtrabaho, agsakripisyo da pay a saan a makita dagiti annak da, paryentes, ken asawa iti nabayag a panawen. Agsakripisyo da nga anusan ti rigat ken iliw,” stated Tubban.

Contrary to what other people think, the governor stressed that the life of OFWs is not easy. ‘Some of them even have to sacrifice their lives just because they want a better life for their children.’

Tubban then urged the family members of OFWs especially their children to do their best in their studies for them to be able to give back to their parents working abroad.

The governor assured that the provincial government along with various line agencies have been working hard to strengthen Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as well as livelihood programs for various organizations and individuals to lessen job dependence.

In addition, OWWA regional and provincial offices are offering programs and services to OFW families such as scholarships and other grants.

“This Christmas, although, our OFWs are far away from home, they are never far from our hearts. For those who have returned… welcome home, our hearts have never changed. Let us then remain strong and committed to the goals of our family, working alongside each other for the future we have dreamed of having… not only for our children but also for our community,” Tubban concluded.
