3,000 Arabica seedlings awarded to Itogon IPs

Benguet, Philippines – The Department of Agriculture-Cordillera on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, reported that 3,000 Arabica Coffee Seedlings were delivered to the Domolpos-Ansipsip Ancestral Domain Indigenous Peoples Organization (DAADIPO).


This is to increase the coffee trees in the cultural community to enhance the production of at least 45 families.


As DA-CAR envisions of developing Indigenous Cultural Communities in the region while preserving their culture and tradition, DA- Cordillera picked Sitio Domolpos in Tinongdan, Itogon as a recipient and pilot area in the region for their Kabuhayan at Kaunlaran ng Kababayang Katutubo (4Ks) Program, of which coffee production was identified as a livelihood subproject.

The coffee seedlings worth P75,000.00, the DA reports.


The community, in general, are coffee farmers and the seedlings are needed to augment their planted coffee, as they plan to develop their local coffee enterprise under the 4Ks program.


As part of the program, the beneficiaries were trained on quality coffee production and management before they were given the coffee seedlings.


The coffee production subproject for its implementation will ensure that every member-household of the DAADIPO will participate and benefit from the project.


DAADIPO household will also be encouraged to have their own coffee production sites within their lots and to identify a common area within their ancestral domain for the establishment of a communal coffee plantation.


A previously established nursery through NCIP-CAR is also being eyed to be developed as part of the program, as several activities are being prepared to be conducted as programmed in the coming months.


These include the improvement of existing coffee trees through rejuvenation and enrichment planting; expansion of the coffee area, and provision of post-harvest machinery, tools, and equipment. Members shall also undergo capability trainings as per needs assessment.


Aside from the coffee support sub-project, other subprojects to be included are traditional rice (Heirloom) variety production, native ginger production, soft broom making, livestock and poultry production, and irrigation support Subprojects will also be implemented.


As recalled, DAADIPO was granted P9,500,000.00 worth of package interventions in which P3,600,000.00 shall be allotted for crop production, while P5,900,000.00 will be for livestock and poultry.
