Baguio City, Philippines – During his recent visit to Baguio, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick Gregorio described the city as an ideal hub for a regional training center, citing its forward-thinking and professional local government unit and its “fantastic base in terms of universities."

Gregorio, together with PSC Commissioners Edward Hayco and Walter Torres, conducted an inspection of the ongoing ₱85-million rehabilitation of the Baguio Athletic Bowl on January 9. They were joined by representatives of National Sports Associations (NSAs), Mayor Benjamin Magalong, and local sports officials.

According to the chairman, the onsite inspection was in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to visit different parts of the country for the establishment of a Regional Sports Training Center in each of the 18 regions. Once realized, the initiative would allow athletes and students to train within their respective regions instead of traveling elsewhere.

Gregorio lauded the developments at the Athletic Bowl and expressed optimism that it would become a regional training hub, especially with the support of the NSAs.

“I really believe that Baguio is a perfect place for sports and athletic development. Baguio is the perfect Regional Training Center for the Cordilleras. Why? Because you have a very aggressive and very professional LGU,” Gregorio told the media.

“You have a fantastic base in terms of universities. Importante ang mga estudyante—sila ang magiging mga atleta,” he added.

During the inspection, officials examined the track oval, swimming pool, tennis courts, athletes’ quarters, and other facilities.

The rehabilitation began in November 2025 and, if everything goes as planned, is set for completion by May 2026.

“This is a long-term investment in Filipino athletes that strengthens both grassroots development and elite sports preparation,” the PSC said in a statement.

Gregorio also said the PSC has coordinated with the Department of Education for the possible use of the Teachers’ Camp Sports Center once its rehabilitation is completed.

Meanwhile, Mayor Magalong assured the local government’s continued collaboration to realize the vision of transforming the Athletic Bowl into a regional sports training hub.
